Sustainable Development Goals launched in DPRK

Mr. Tapan Mishra, UN resident Coordinator, with Co-Chair Mr. Rim Yong Chol, Division Director MFA, present the Sustainable Development Goals in Pyongyang, DPRK.

Mr. Tapan Mishra, UN Resident Coordinator, presented the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by 193 UN Member States on 25 September 2015, to partners and relevant line ministries from DPRK Government.

He stressed the importance of working together to adapt the global SDGs to the national level and implement the 2030 agenda. The UN and the DPRK Government are developing the new UN Strategic Framework for the 2017-2021 period, and the new Strategic Framework should reflect this transition from the Millennium Development Goals to the SDGs. It was discussed that at the country level the 17 Goals and its 169 targets need to be carefully prioritised and tailored to the country context to effectively support Government efforts to improve the lives and possibilities of the people.

The meeting identified enhancing the availability of reliable, disaggregated, data to monitor progress towards SDGs' targets as one of the key components to ensure their implementation. The upcoming 2018 Census and national surveys in nutrition and health would present an invaluable opportunity to meet this aim.
